With the arrival of our new baby, I have been able to cloth diaper yet another newborn. While frugality is one of the reasons I use cloth with my kids, there are many other reasons – their softness, their natural fibers, their eco-friendliness, the fact that they are not full of chemicals – so many other reasons I will have to save it for a separate blog post.
I received a trial pack of Baby Tooshy Hemp Diaper Flats to review on my blog in exchange for my HONEST opinion. And in all honestly, they are great! With this baby (shall I dare give her the nickname Pumpkin for this blog?) I found the love for easy, old-fashioned cloth flats. And I found love for all-natural materials.
These Baby Tooshy hemp flats, though, are a 55% hemp, 45% cotton blend. They’re a 27″x27″ flat piece of fabric that can be folded around baby or folded into an insert that sits in a diaper cover (like a Cotton Babies Flip or a Blueberry Capri).
They are super soft and thick – about like your favorite pair of sweatpants. I find their thickness a little much for a two month old baby, however I use them with both of my youngest daughters (aged 2 months and 2 years) at night. They could be doubled up for extra absorbency, but I haven’t had an issue with them yet.
Here is a photo of the flats with other diapers to compare thickness. The Baby Tooshy hemp flats are on the bottom, next is Blueberry Gauze, then Nicki’s Diapers brand cotton flat, then on top is a Daytime Flip insert.
Hemp is a great material for diapers because it is very absorbent. It can holds up to 8 times as much fluid than cotton. It also has natural antibacterial properties. For years, I have been using a Hemp Babies hemp doubler overnight when cloth diapering my babies. However, in time, two out of three of ours got lost, so I was eager to try these hemp flats.
Hemp is a slow absorbing material, so for daytime, pairing them with microfiber or another quick-absorbing material, might be necessary for your baby. However, I have not had this issue with my two daughters. Also, be aware that hemp/cotton blends curl around the edges when exposed to heat. I have experienced this with several brands as well. Line drying is suggested if you want to prevent it.
My overall opinion of these diapers are that they are a GREAT addition too any cloth diapering system. They are so versatile that they can be stuffed into pocket diapers, used in regular diaper covers, used with wool covers, AND used from the baby to toddler stages for either day or night. Plus, flats make excellent burp rags, changing table liners, and sheet protectors. Once the kids have outgrown cloth diapers, these will make great cleaning towels since they absorb so much.
The Baby Tooshy brand are available on Amazon for about half the price of the leading brand of hemp diaper flats. They are currently at a price of $29.99 for 6. Please note that while I did receive the product for free or at a discount in exchange for an honest review, I have only stated my honest opinion here. I would not recommend a product I didn’t absolutely love. No affiliate links are included in this post.
